TaLAI Study Maps GenAI's Expanding Role in Higher Education

A new systematic review published in Trends in Higher Education examines how Generative AI is transforming teaching and learning at universities. Conducted under the Erasmus+ project "TaLAI: Teaching and Learning with AI in Higher Education," the study, led by Tanja Tillmanns (University of Erlangen–Nuremberg) with colleagues from South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences, the University of Amsterdam, and MEDEA: Media & Learning, analysed 93 peer-reviewed articles across eight databases. The review, published 8 January 2025, covers four key areas: learning objectives, teaching activities, curriculum development, and institutional support for ethical AI use. It finds broad agreement on GenAI's value in education, while stressing that human-centred elements -mentorship, creativity, emotional intelligence, and higher-order thinking - remain essential as institutions integrate the technology. The findings aim to guide curriculum design and support universities in building effective, ethical AI-enhanced learning environments.
